Dry Needling

What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a form of therapy used by medical professionals to treat musculoskeletal pain and tissue dysfunction.

A fine filament needle is inserted into the symptomatic tissue. This creates a micro lesion that helps to normalize the inflammatory process, increase circulation, restore tissue function and overall decrease pain.

Dry needling is not acupuncture, although the same type of needle is used. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical treatment that is based on philosophy and clinical experience. Dry needling is founded on western medicine theories and modern medical sciences including anatomy, physiology, pathology, human biomechanics and neurology.

What Conditions Does Dry Needling Treat?

Dry needling is indicated for the following conditions:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Hip and buttock pain
  • Foot pain
  • Knee pain
  • Headaches
  • Tennis and golfer's elbow
  • Treatments Coupled with Needling

Dry needling is rarely performed as a solo treatment. Your physical therapist will perform a complete evaluation of your condition and will develop a personalized plan to restore function and to meet individualized goals. Other treatments may include manual stretching or mobilization and exercises to increase flexibility and strength.
